France: Pool A

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 3-2, Cup Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 28 (8th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Cup Semifinal, 2006 Plate Final

What to watch for:

They play a very physical type of game, and it’s usually one of their props who is their most effective player. Emeric Chrestien is a scrappy member of an opportunistic team that almost unseated New Zealand in Dubai.

New Zealand: Pool A

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 4-1, Cup Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 130 (1st)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2005 Champions

What to watch for:

New Zealand lost their two leading players before Dubai to injury, and still won. But Zar Lawrence, Tomasi Cama, Lote Raikabula and Steven Yates can all play at a high level. The All Blacks do not have out-and-out pace-- few teams actually do--but they have great ball skills, they are physical and are unafraid to get into contact when they have to, and they maintain continuity

Scotland: Pool A

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 3-3, Plate Final
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 26 (9th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Plate Final

What to watch for:

The Scots started off this season far better than last year--earning Sevens Series points in their first outing--and are poised to be a dark horse to make the top four in San Diego.

Wales: Pool A

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: DNP
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 38 (6th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: First USA 7s

What to watch for:

In February, they make their first trip to the US and will do it with the might of the WRU behind them. They started out relatively slowly this season, but they have been known to unearth some fast, talented outside backs.

Australia: Pool B

Team Notes:
2007 USA 7s: 2-3, Plate Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 32 (7th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2004 Cup Semifinal

What to watch for:

They can play 7s, although they tend to go into contact more than most coaches would like, and like Samoa they can show flashes of brilliance. But you get the feeling Australia just doesn’t take 7s seriously enough, and as such they underachieve

Fiji: Pool B

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 6-0, Champions
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 128 (2nd)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Champions

What to watch for:

Neumi Nanuku and Emosi Vucago are two superb try-scoring attackers, but everyone on this team is dangerous. It took Fiji four years to win in the US, and that wait didn’t sit too well with them. They will be very eager to win a second consecutive trophy.

Samoa: Pool B

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 5-1, Finalists
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 122 (3rd)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Cup Final

What to watch for:

Last year they were brilliant, winning in New Zealand and Hong Kong. This year they are younger, less experienced, and will not be the championship threat they were every tournament last year.

West Indies: Pool B

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 0-5, Shield Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 0
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Shield Semifinal

What to watch for:

Called Trinidad & Tobago in the first USA 7s in 2004, under any name they have yet to win a game in 15 attempts. It’s not for lack of being competitive. The West Indies team is fast and exciting, but their physicality and teamwork are lacking.

Argentina: Pool C

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 3-3, Bowl Final
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 23 (10th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2004 Champions

What to watch for:

Argentina plays committed defense to keep that pressure going and the tactic works. Santiago Gomez Cora has been the main beneficiary, scoring more tries than any other IRB Sevens Series player of any country. With another good season he could top 200 for his career.

Canada: Pool C

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 2-3, Bowl Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 8 (13th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2004 Plate Final, 2005 Bowl Winners

What to watch for:

Make mistakes against Canada and they will pounce. They still hit as hard as anyone, and are very patient, happy to let a game remain low-scoring until the opportunities come.

Chile: Pool C

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 1-4, Shield Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 0
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Shield Semifinal

What to watch for:

Last year was Chile’s first appearance at the USA 7s, and they played quite well, knocking off Canada. As expected, they showed they were a smart, skilled side that really only lacked size up front and a blazing speedster out wide.

Kenya: Pool C

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 2-3, Bowl Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 22 (11th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2005 Bowl Final, 2006 Shield Winners

What to watch for:

Kenya is an opportunistic team. They play a soft, almost “prevent” defense, and wait for teams to make mistakes. If you drop the ball, though, look out because they will attack from everywhere.

England: Pool D

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 2-3, Plate Semifinal
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 52 (5th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2006 Champions

What to watch for:

England is playing the most sound form of 7s this season. They control and move the ball unselfishly, look for gaps very well, and are very physical in the tackle. To single out Anthony Elliott as one of their key try-scorers is almost unfair because many players are available to step in.

Mexico: Pool D

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: DNP
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 0
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2005 Shield Final

What to watch for:

Mexico is a fan favorite at the USA 7s and will be welcomed back enthusiastically after missing out last year. Their fan base in Southern California is strong and while they are not expected to win too many games, they posted a surprise victory over the West Indies in 2005.

South Africa: Pool D

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 4-2, Plate Winners
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 92 (4th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2007 Plate Winners

What to watch for:

This year, led by Danwel Demas and third all-time leading try-scorer Fabian Juries, they will remain a team good enough to win any tournament. They are more physical up front than most contenders, and their fast players out wide are as good as anyone’s.

USA: Pool D

Team Notes:

2007 USA 7s: 3-3, Won Shield
2006-07 IRB Sevens Series Points: 2 (T15th)
Best Finish at USA 7s: 2004, 2007 Shield Winners

What to watch for:

Caravelli has worked hard to mold a team that is fit, fast at every position, and doesn't miss tackles.Experienced players such as the ever-physical Todd Clever, versatile Jason Gillenwater, and the always poised Chris Wyles will have a lot on their shoulders. Watch for Thretton Palamo to have a breakout day on home turf.
